In 2004 the Rhode Island Department of Education introduced a new diploma system for all the public schools that would be in full implementation starting with the class of 2008. The primary change to the diploma system is addition of Proficiency Based Graduation Requirements (PBGR). PBGR requires a student to be proficient in the six core content areas and in applied learning skills. The six core areas are English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, The Arts, and Technology. The areas of applied learning are Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, Research, Communication, and Personal and Social Responsibility.
Students may demonstrate proficiency in a variety of ways including but not limited to projects, performances, essays, and journals. This evidence of proficiency is required to be presented through two of the four following options: Exhibition/Capstone Project, Portfolio, Certificate of Initial Mastery, or End of Course Assessment. Each high school in Rhode Island has chosen two options for its students.
Since BACS was established with these mandates in mind, it meets the requirements of RIDE through the BACS portfolio system, which includes a Senior Project. For more detailed information on our portfolio system please visit our Portfolio page.
